Day 1: Disordered Eating Isn't Your Fault: The Role of Trauma, Mental Health, and Systems

We aren’t born with the desire to control food or our bodies. For most, a disordered relationship with food stems from a mix of learned behavior (hello, diet culture, we’re looking at you) and the mind and body’s response to coping with trauma, systems of oppression, or other aspects of life that feel out of control or painful.

In this session, we want to bust the myth that disordered eating is about the food itself by dissecting the many factors that do lead folks to a strained, emotional, anxious, or otherwise unhappy relationship with food.

Panelists in this session are:

  • Aaron Flores, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Body Trust® Specialist

  • Christyna Johnson, Registered Dietitian

  • Kara Rabii, Anti-diet Dietitian, Socialist, Community Organizer, and Founder of Revolutionary Dietetics

  • Lauren Bell, PhD candidate at the University of Texas, Austin where she is part of the Food Security Lab within the Department of Nutritional Sciences.

Day 2: Why Midlife Is Diet Culture’s New Favorite Target

The diet culture industry’s primary focus is to make money, and folks in their midlife season are one of its newest money-making targets. In a world that tells women to stay young and small, this population is especially vulnerable to sneaky messaging and products for “aging gracefully” or “staying youthful.”

In this session, we’ll talk about the many ways diet culture has crept into midlife and menopause, why this is so dangerous, how disordered eating can look for women in midlife, and how to untangle true wellbeing as we age from disordered diet culture beliefs.

Panelists in this session are:

  • Jenn Salib Huber, Registered Dietitian, Naturopathic Doctor, Intuitive Eating Counselor, and author of Eat to Thrive in Menopause

  • Deb Benfield, MEd, RDN/LDN, RYT, is the author of Unapologetic Aging: How to Mend and Nourish Your Relationship with Your Body and a nutrition therapist and body image coach

  • Janine Sanches Rodrigues, MS, MLIS, CNS, LDN, CDN, is a clinical nutritionist specializing in the nutritional and emotional health of midlife women.

Day 3: Recognizing Disordered Eating in Your Clients and Patients

As a nutrition or mental health practitioner, doctor, or other healthcare professional, the question is not whether disordered eating is an issue for clients and patients, but whether you can expand your view of health and well-being to both see and effectively address it.

In this session, practitioners and clinicians will learn how to recognize the sometimes sneaky signs of disordered eating. Plus, how to speak to clients or patients who exhibit those signs, how to leverage collaborative care to support them, how GLP-1s come into play in today's culture, and other possible steps to provide weight-neutral, anti-diet, trauma-informed care.

Panelists in this session are:

  • Erin Knopf, Board-Certified Pediatrician, Adult Psychiatrist, and Child/Adolescent Psychiatrist, IADEP Certified Eating Disorder Specialist Consultant (CED-C)

  • Meg Bowman, Polyvagal Theory-Informed Nutritionist, Speaker, Author, and Storyteller Specializing in Mental Health and GI Nutrition

  • Marcela Rondani, LMFT, CEDS, PsyD, Owner/ Clinical Director at Orenda Clinical Services Inc

  • Vaughn Darst, MS, RDN, Owner of All Gender Nutrition

Day 4: Navigating Diet Culture in Healthcare and Wellness Spaces

Diet culture views, fatphobic and racial beliefs, and weight stigma run rampant in health and wellness spaces. This drives many folks deeper into disordered eating behaviors that create even more harm.

In this session, we’re sharing ideas, insights, personal stories, and practical strategies to navigate a system that’s heavily influenced by Eurocentric views of health. Our goal is for you to leave this session empowered to advocate for your unique health and wellness needs.

Panelists in this session are:

  • Julie Duffy Dillon, Registered Dietitian and Host of Find Your Food Voice®, and author of the forthcoming book, PMOS Power Moves: Nutrition and Exercise Strategies to Balance Blood Sugar, Improve Fertility, and Repair Body Image.

  • Andrea Hinojosa, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Lactation Counselor, Storyteller, Consultant, and Founder of Honest Health & Wellness

  • Savala Nolan, a celebrated essayist, speaker, and teacher.

Day 5: We're All Influencers: Creating Anti-Diet Awareness in Your Community

What you say and do about food has an impact on the people around you. We are always influencing someone, whether it’s a friend, a child, a family member, or even someone you don’t know who happens to hear you in passing.

In this session, we want to talk about why this matters so much, the many ways diet culture is hiding in everyday language and behaviors, and how to make sure that you have a positive influence on the way people in your community view food, body, and nourishment.

Panelists in this session are:

  • Tomesha Campbell, Tomesha Campbell is an educator, health coach and creator of What’s Causing This?

  • Dr. Lisa Folden, North Carolina licensed physical therapist, NASM certified behavior change specialist, and Anti-Diet Health & Body Image Coach

  • Jason Wood, Executive Director of ANAD, the nation’s leading non-profit providing free peer support for eating disorder recovery, and the author of the memoir Starving for Survival
